Our First Lady


Mrs. Avis C. O’Bryant-Chaney, “affectionately called Lady Avis”, daughter of the late Lawrence O’Bryant and Elease Bennett O’Bryant, is a native of Augusta, Georgia. She is a 1990 graduate of the Academy of Richmond County Comprehensive High School and in 2003 was an honor graduate of Morris College in Sumter, SC earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.  In fall of 2006, Mrs. Chaney graduated with honors with a Master of Education degree with a concentration in History from Troy University, Troy Alabama.

Her present and past memberships and affiliations include:  Second Baptist Church of Las Vegas; Theta Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc -Las Vegas, NV, Top Ladies of Distinction- Las Vegas, NV, Top Teen Advisor for Top Teens of America, Girl Friends Inc., past president and chaplain of the Nu Gamma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc- Sumter SC.; chaplain of the Upsilon Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc- Irmo SC.; chairman for the 2009 South Atlantic Regional Conference Ecumenical Services-Myrtle Beach, SC; secretary and queen of the New Emphasis on Non-Traditional Students; vice president of the Morris College Student Government Association; and charter member of the Morris College Leadership Institute.

Mrs. Chaney is a recipient of numerous awards including: the Harris Sabino Richardson Memorial Award, the Edward H. Thomas Endowed Memorial Scholarship, and the Westcott A. Johnson Scholarship. She was the winner of the 2000 Morris College  Oratorical Contest.  Mrs. Chaney had the privilege of being on the Dean’s List at Morris College for the duration of her college career. She is a former Adjunct Professor of History at Denmark Technical College, Denmark SC and currently an Adjunct Professor of College Success at the College of Southern Nevada.

Since 2009, Mrs. Chaney has been performing and ministering with the Las Vegas Mass Choir under the direction of founder James R. Smith. She has performed at the House of Blues in the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Resort as well as performed for the Michael Jackson Tribute at the Palms Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada.  She has done extensive background vocals with the Grammy Award Winning Group “The Killer Bees” and Trent Carlini, the “Ultimate Elvis Impersonator”, at the Las Vegas Hilton.

In 2012, Mrs. Chaney hosted the African–American Woman for Obama with actress Tracey Ellis Ross.

She is the proud and supportive wife of the Reverend. Dr. D Edward Chaney esteemed Senior Pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Las Vegas, Nevada. She is even more proud as a mother of their three children; Morgan Synclaire, Donald Edward II and Lawrence William
